Admin order to shut 'illegal' swimming pools

GURGAON: The district administration issued an order on Thursday stating that all the swimming pools in the city lacking requisite permissions should be closed immediately, failing which they would face legal action.

The order came from deputy commissioner Shekhar Vidyarthi, who is also the chairman of the district sports council. He said that the swimming pools without licences would be sealed and owners or operators would face action.

He said that several housing societies, hotels, firms, educational institutions and resorts had swimming pools on their premises without a valid licence.

The order came a couple of days after two children drowned in a pool in a school on Sohna Road. Most of the establishments TOI spoke to claim to have requisite permissions and said they will remain unaffected by the edict. "All the pools in DLF are run only after necessary permissions. The approvals are taken without fail," said Sudhir Kapoor, president of DLF City RWA.Authorities claim to have all the necessary permissions at the pools being run in clubs. "We can't run the pools without necessary permissions," said Rohit Malik, director (estate) of DLF Limited.

Pollution control board directs meat complex to repair effluent treatment plant

PANAJI: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday directed the Goa Meat Complex to repair the existing effluent treatment plant (ETP), which treats the waste water generated by the meat complex while slaughtering animals. The board also said that failure to comply with the directions will force the GSPCB to withdraw the consent to operate under the Water Act. The GSPCB held a personal hearing with a representative of the meat complex. Board members highlighted the findings of the inspection report which stated that the ETP is not functioning. Speaking to TOI, GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that the inspection report states that the chemical oxygen limit has increased to 2,500 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 250 mg/litre. "It is ten times higher than the permissible limit," he added. He also said that bio-chemical oxygen limit has gone up to 850 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 30mg/liter. Water level rise in reservoirs of Kerala

With the heavy rain in the recent days Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has seen a rise in level of water in reservoirs by 2 percent raising the toll from 72% to 74%. As the water level increased, it made possible to produce from 2,985.2 mu (million unit) of electricity on the first day to 3,045.231 mu on the third day with the rising trend on 4 th day too. It is observed for the first time that the water storage level has risen to the extent that the Pampa and Kakki reservoirs has seen the rise in water level by 5 percent within a single day. Even the Kundal reservoir was operated at its full capacity and the Sholayar dam saw a rose by 1 percent. Even the Mullaperiyar dam saw a drastic rise in water storage on a single day with 128 ft which was 121.7 ft two days earlier.
