Drinking water crisis in Telangana & Andhra Pradesh due to rise in demand

30 towns of states of   Telangana   and   Andhra Pradesh   are moaning in the thirst of drinking water as the water levels have dropped to the alarming level of 64 tmc feet in the two major reservoirs of Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar. The Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has allocated only 4 tmc water against the requirement of 5 tmc feet water to extinguish thirst of about one crore people in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. Every town has the dependency upon the fresh inflows in the left and right canals of Nagarjunasagar which is further dependent upon both sides of river Krishna. Belgaum Institute of Medical Science to get effluent treatment plant

BELGAUM: The Belgaum Institute of Medical Science (BIMS) will set up an effluent treatment plant (ETP) on its civil hospital premises at a cost of Rs 1.8 crore. The proposal for setting up the plant was sent in 2011 but was sanctioned a couple of weeks ago. It will be set up as per the guidelines of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board. The work on the new plant will commence once the tender process is completed. Once the ETP comes up, treated water will not got waste. It will be used for cleaning, gardening and various other purposes. The proposed plant tank has a capacity of 1,000 kilolitres. The new treatment plant will help save fresh water which is used for gardening and other non-drinking purposes. "Already the government has released 60 per cent of the sanctioned amount of Rs 1.8crore. We will soon invite tender and work will commence in another two months. HC orders MIDC to construct common effluent treatment plant

NASHIK: The Bombay High Court (HC) on Tuesday ordered the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to submit an affidavit by September 30 on when and how it will be constructing the common effluent treatment plant (ETP) in Nashik. The divisional bench comprising Abhay Oka and Gautam Patel was hearing the petition filed by Godavakri Gatarikaran Virodhi Manch against government officials for the pollution of the Godavari river. The HC said the MIDC was shrugging off its responsibility and had no right to point fingers at others for the river's pollution. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has also been asked to present a report by September 30 on what action it has taken on erring industries. PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has proposed the construction of a common effluent treatment plant for industries to check the release of industrial effluents into the Pavana and Indrayani rivers. Pollution control board directs meat complex to repair effluent treatment plant

PANAJI: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday directed the Goa Meat Complex to repair the existing effluent treatment plant (ETP), which treats the waste water generated by the meat complex while slaughtering animals. The board also said that failure to comply with the directions will force the GSPCB to withdraw the consent to operate under the Water Act. The GSPCB held a personal hearing with a representative of the meat complex. Board members highlighted the findings of the inspection report which stated that the ETP is not functioning. Speaking to TOI, GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that the inspection report states that the chemical oxygen limit has increased to 2,500 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 250 mg/litre. "It is ten times higher than the permissible limit," he added. He also said that bio-chemical oxygen limit has gone up to 850 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 30mg/liter. General body approves Padegaon's effluent treatment plant project

AURANGABAD: The general body (GB) on Thursday rejected the civic body's ambitious proposal to set up a sewage treatment plant (STP) at Siddhartha Garden and Zoo. At the same time, the GB gave the green signal to the effluent treatment plant (ETP) planned at Padegaon slaughter house. Mayor Kala Oza said that the municipal body was trying to incorporate six STPs, including the one at Siddhartha Garden, under the state government's Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Size Towns (UIDSSMT) and hence the administration should not go for it separately. However, Oza felt that the ETP plant at Padegaon was the need of the hour and thus approved it. The administration had tabled the proposals before the GB after appointing a consultant for the projects. PANAJI: The Goa state pollution control board (GSPCB), Goa industrial development corporation (GIDC) and industrial units at Bethora industrial estate on Thursday decided to set up a common effluent treatment plant (ETP) at Bethora industrial estate to treat waste-processed water generated by industries to stop polluting the 'nullah' flowing from Bethora to Curti. There are around 46 industrial units operating at Bethora in Ponda. The meeting was held at the GSPCB office and representatives of GIDC, six industrial units and the Bethora-Nirankal village panchayat. Speaking to TOI, GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said "We have taken a decision to setup the common ETP to stop polluting the nullah." Tanneries mull centralised effluent treatment plant

KANPUR: Strict pollution norms and active interference of high court had forced the tanners of the city to execute their business under specified norms. With an aim to establish a centralized treatment plant, UP Leathers Industries Association, Janmau Tannery Association and Small Tanners constituted a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for environmental protection on Thursday evening. Imran Siddiqui, director of tannery, said SPV was created to meet specific needs. The main agenda of SPV would be how centralized treatment plant could be constituted and how it could be conducted. Without centralized treatment plant, it would be difficult for them to expand and run business. He said that as many as 12 directors had been deputed in SPV and it would be non-profitable organization.
