Bethora industrial estate to get common effluent treatment plant

PANAJI: The Goa state pollution control board (GSPCB), Goa industrial development corporation (GIDC) and industrial units at Bethora industrial estate on Thursday decided to set up a common effluent treatment plant (ETP) at Bethora industrial estate to treat waste-processed water generated by industries to stop polluting the 'nullah' flowing from Bethora to Curti.

There are around 46 industrial units operating at Bethora in Ponda. The meeting was held at the GSPCB office and representatives of GIDC, six industrial units and the Bethora-Nirankal village panchayat.

Speaking to TOI, GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said "We have taken a decision to setup the common ETP to stop polluting the nullah."

During the meeting, a GIDC representative said that integrated leasing and financial service company had done a study and concluded that it was not feasible to set up a common water treatment plant to which the board had asked it to submit the report.

Earlier, acting upon a complaint by Betora-Nirankal village panchayat, the board had conducted an inspection and recommended that since the units have been generating less quantity of industrial effluents, the units may be recommended to install a common ETP.

The inspection report also recommended that the nullah has to be desilted immediately before the onset of monsoon so as to avoid flow of waste into the water body. The nullah may be inspected in the monsoon to ascertain the quantity of spring water at upstream and downstream.

The Bethora-Nirankal gramsabha held on April 2013 raised objections regarding releasing industrial waste water into the natural nullah.

Accordingly, the panchayat and villageres conducted an inspection and it was found that Bethora factory owners were releasing industrial waste into the nullah, which would prove hazardous to the people of Curti and Queula village who are residing on the bank of the nullah.

The panchayat had approached the board to take necessary action as early as possible in order to stop the release of industrial waste water into the nullah.
