Navelim locals shut down sewage treatment plan in protest of Margao municipal council decision

MARGAO: Agitated over the decision of the Margao municipal council (MMC) to reject the proposal of Navelim MLA Avertano Furtado for accepting the garbage generated in Navelim at the Sonsoddo waste treatment plant, irate residents from Navelim on Thursday forcibly stopped the functioning of the sewage treatment plan(STP) at Sirvodem, Navelim, in protest.

This led to some anxious moments leading to the intervention by South Goa collector N D Agrawal with a view to prevent the imminent crisis if the STP remained shut for long. Some bureaucratic maneuvering followed, and Agrawal rushed to the STP site later in the day and effected resumption of the plant.

Furtado, speaking to mediapersons, said that he had extended his support to the Navelim residents who had approached him after the MMC refused to accept their garbage for treatment on Thursday.

Furtado said that he has already spoken to chief minister Manohar Parrikar over the issue who has assured to hold a meeting with the MMC at Margao on Tuesday in regards with the matter.

At the council meeting of the Margao municipality that was convened on Tuesday, it was decided that any request from neighboring villages for accepting their garbage at Sonsoddo waste treatment plant shall be considered only after the landfill site under construction at Sonsoddo gets completed and the plant gets fully functional.

Two-year-old drowns in swimming pool at Parra hotel

MAPUSA: A two-year-old boy met a watery grave after he drowned in a hotel's swimming pool in Parra on October 20. Police officials said a group of families had come to the state on a vacation from Bangalore and were staying in a hotel at Parra. Sources said there were 17 children in the group. While some of the families were relaxing in the hotel on Sunday, the two-year-old fell into the pool unnoticed and drowned. On noticing their son's absence, the parents began a frantic search for him, only to find his body in the pool. The police have conducted a panchanama and have sent the body to the Goa medical college and hospital in Bambolim for the postmortem. Police have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 174 CrPC. Further investigations are under way. Sewage flowing on Ayodhya Nagar road

Nagpur:  People staying in Dattatray Nagar, a part of Ayodhya Nagar in South Nagpur, are fearing outbreak of vector-borne diseases in their area. The area is grappling with mosquito menace and hygiene issues due to overflowing   sewage   for the last 4-5 days, highlighting negligence of Nagpur Municipal Corporation in ensuring quality work from private contractors. A resident of Ayodhya Nagar, New Subedar road Vijay Bhaturkar told TOI that they are mainly worried about the students of NMC Dattatray Nagar School in the locality. "NMC laid new sewage line in our locality. However, instead of flowing underground, the sewage started overflowing on the road from chambers. The overflow starts in the morning, submerging the road. This is happening for the last four-five days and nobody from NMC is paying attention," he said.
