Sewage forms a pond in Himanshu Layout

NAGPUR: Overflowing sewage from Nagpur Improvement Trust's trunk line in Himanshu Layout in Wathoda is posing a health hazard to the residents of the locality. After the heavy rains of June 25, the inter-septic trunk line constructed by NIT was damaged. The sewage flowed over to the road and took the shape of a pond.

It is common to see stagnant sewage this area because of poor construction of sewage chambers and frequent blockage in the pipeline, allege residents. "A huge open plot where the water has accumulated has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquito menace has reached alarming proportions forcing most of us to keep windows and doors closed," say residents.

"Hundreds of residents of the area have to live with the nauseating smell of stagnant sewage water for the past few days. A mild shower is enough to drain the water right into our homes," said a miffed Himanshu Layout resident Chandrashekhar Pillay.

"During monsoon, sewage and rainwater overflows from almost all the drainage channels and enters the sumps as the street is covered with layers of sandy subsoil," residents pointed out. They say that repeated complaints to NIT to clear the overflowing sewage have fallen on deaf ears.

"We have been staying here for seven years and waterlogging has remained a problem. The problem has turned grave because of a damaged culvert," said another resident Manoj Pardhi.

Even MLA Krishna Khopde made repeated representations to the NIT to reconstruct a proper sewage network but no action has been taken till date, the residents alleged. They said they feared outbreak of vector and water borne diseases in the locality. The residents also demanded abolishing of NIT as developing agency in Gunthewari Act of 572 and 1,900 layouts.

The corporators have also blamed the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT). A decade ago, NIT had begun regularizing unauthorized layouts under Gunthewari Act but still the area in Wathoda is deprived of civic amenities. Wathoda corporator Pravin Narad claimed the entire trunk line was damage and needed immediate replacement. "NIT is claiming they could not carry-out the work due to lack of funds," he pointed out and claimed NIT was not serious about citizens' health.

The corporator also said sanitation, roads, electricity and water supply were some of the major issues among the scores of residents in NIT run areas. The middle-class families here are made to cope with the lack of amenities and are irked with their public representatives.

A NIT official said there were plans to improve the drainage system in the are and it would be implemented in a short time. He refused to give a time frame.
