Effluent treatment plant mooted
PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has proposed the construction of a common effluent treatment plant for industries to check the release of industrial effluents into the Pavana and Indrayani rivers.
Municipal commissioner Release of industrial effluents into the Pavana and Indrayani river that leads to water pollution has prompted the Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation to propose the construction of a common effluent treatment plant for industries.
Shrikar Pardeshi said, "A detailed project report will be prepared within two to three months. The project report will be sent to the civic standing committee and the Union government for approval after which we will ask the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation to allot land for the plant."
Initial estimates suggest that the capacity of the proposed plant should be 0.6 to 0.7 million litres per day as around six to seven lakh litre of effluents are generated daily by small scale industries, he said.
"Pimpri Chinchwad has a large number of big, medium and small-scale industries located in the MIDC. The big industries have their own effluent treatment plants but the numerous small enterprises do not have such facility," Pardeshi said.
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board had requested the civic body to coordinate with small-scale industries to implement the project. The common treatment plant will be constructed with funds from the Union and state governments and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. The civic body will contribute 30% of the construction cost, Pardeshi said.
He said that in view of their limitations the civic body was taking the lead in constructing the common treatment plant as the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board had requested the civic body to co-ordinate with the small industries for implementing the project. The common treatment plant will be constructed with financial contribution from the union and state governments and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. The civic body will contribute 30% of the construction cost, Pardeshi said.
"The small industries located in the industrial areas of the city pay property tax and local body tax to the civic body. They also help in employment generation for the local residents. Hence, the civic body will contribute funds to set up the common treatment plant," Pardeshi explained.
Pardeshi said the industries that generate effluent but do not treat it before releasing it into the drainage will have to store the effluents in tanks. "The tankers of the civic body will collect this effluent and transport it to the common treatment plant. The treated effluents will then be released into the rivers," he said.
The enterprises whose effluents will be treated at the plant will have to pay fees. The income generated through it will be used for operation and maintenance of the plant, Pardeshi said.
