AG exposes Karnataka’s contradictory stand on Mhadei Water Dispute

PANAJI/KERI: The Karnataka government's record in water disputes is a bundle of contradictions, as it is fighting against any diversion of water from the Krishna Godavari basin, but aggressively pursuing a project to link Mhadei's tributaries to the Malaprabha basin, advocate general of the state Atmaram Nadkarni stated before the Mhadei water disputes tribunal.

While pointing out that the Karnataka government has countered such proposals by neighbouring states before the Krishna and Godavari tribunals, contending that there cannot be diversion outside the basin, Nadkarni stated that they are precisely trying to do the same here by diverting Kalasa and other tributaries from Mhadei to link them to the Malaprabha basin.

The state government, which has locked horns with Karnataka over the water dispute, has also succeeded in getting an order from the tribunal to inspect the documents furnished by Karnataka in its dispute over Krishna Godavari water.

Pollution control board directs meat complex to repair effluent treatment plant

PANAJI: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday directed the Goa Meat Complex to repair the existing effluent treatment plant (ETP), which treats the waste water generated by the meat complex while slaughtering animals. The board also said that failure to comply with the directions will force the GSPCB to withdraw the consent to operate under the Water Act. The GSPCB held a personal hearing with a representative of the meat complex. Board members highlighted the findings of the inspection report which stated that the ETP is not functioning. Speaking to TOI, GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that the inspection report states that the chemical oxygen limit has increased to 2,500 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 250 mg/litre. "It is ten times higher than the permissible limit," he added. He also said that bio-chemical oxygen limit has gone up to 850 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 30mg/liter. Water level rise in reservoirs of Kerala

With the heavy rain in the recent days Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has seen a rise in level of water in reservoirs by 2 percent raising the toll from 72% to 74%. As the water level increased, it made possible to produce from 2,985.2 mu (million unit) of electricity on the first day to 3,045.231 mu on the third day with the rising trend on 4 th day too. It is observed for the first time that the water storage level has risen to the extent that the Pampa and Kakki reservoirs has seen the rise in water level by 5 percent within a single day. Even the Kundal reservoir was operated at its full capacity and the Sholayar dam saw a rose by 1 percent. Even the Mullaperiyar dam saw a drastic rise in water storage on a single day with 128 ft which was 121.7 ft two days earlier.
