Stop polluting Ganga or shut shop: Uma Bharti

Government is now serious about river Ganga and directed the polluting industries to set up online effluent monitoring system by 31st march next year. This tough message to polluting units is said by water resources minister Uma Bharti. "If the child (industry) would suck mother's (Ganga) blood, she would prefer the mother to survive", said Bharti. Her remarks came after several rounds of consultation with representatives of polluting industries. Environment minister Prakash Javadekar and many experts including Vinod Tare, coordinator of IIT Consortium that is preparing the Ganga River Basin Management Plan and R K Pachauri, director general of TERI and chairman of the UN's IPCC — attended the consultations and pitched for quick action to save the river. The online effluent monitoring will bring the transparency in the process of monitoring. As per the new system, the industries are required to install "continuous effluent and emission monitoring devices" at their discharge outlets and this devices would be linked online with State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) offices in state capitals and with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) headquarters in Delhi. It will allow the central pollution watchdog to monitor the discharges from the industries on real-time basis.

The Delhi Jal Board has lodged a complaint against a fake department website, very similar to the real one, that may have been used to dupe consumers. Pollution control board directs meat complex to repair effluent treatment plant

PANAJI: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday directed the Goa Meat Complex to repair the existing effluent treatment plant (ETP), which treats the waste water generated by the meat complex while slaughtering animals. The board also said that failure to comply with the directions will force the GSPCB to withdraw the consent to operate under the Water Act. The GSPCB held a personal hearing with a representative of the meat complex. Board members highlighted the findings of the inspection report which stated that the ETP is not functioning. Speaking to TOI, GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that the inspection report states that the chemical oxygen limit has increased to 2,500 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 250 mg/litre. "It is ten times higher than the permissible limit," he added. He also said that bio-chemical oxygen limit has gone up to 850 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 30mg/liter. Water level rise in reservoirs of Kerala

With the heavy rain in the recent days Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has seen a rise in level of water in reservoirs by 2 percent raising the toll from 72% to 74%. As the water level increased, it made possible to produce from 2,985.2 mu (million unit) of electricity on the first day to 3,045.231 mu on the third day with the rising trend on 4 th day too. It is observed for the first time that the water storage level has risen to the extent that the Pampa and Kakki reservoirs has seen the rise in water level by 5 percent within a single day. Even the Kundal reservoir was operated at its full capacity and the Sholayar dam saw a rose by 1 percent. Even the Mullaperiyar dam saw a drastic rise in water storage on a single day with 128 ft which was 121.7 ft two days earlier.
