VISAKHAPATNAM: Instead of beach beautification, prominent Vizag beaches are turning obnoxious with every passing day. After garbage and litter and direct disposal of sewerage into sea at the RK Beach area, now, untreated sewerage and dirty water from resorts and colonies are being directly dumped into the sea stretch from Rushikonda to Sagarnagar.

Trenches have been dug for the purpose by a resort at Rushikonda Beach and by the Sagarnagar colony residents at Sagarnagar beach for the purpose. This has become a major turnoff for tourists, especially foreigners who like to go surfing at Rushikonda in that particular area. Besides, water pollution is also endangering the lives of fish and other aquatic creatures.

A few days ago, regular beach goers noticed a trench being dug in front of a private resort adjacent to the Coast Guard office. Soon dirty water and sewage started flowing into the sea barely 100 metres away. Sources from the Waveriders Surf School said since July 9, the trench was being dug and sewerage from the private resort was let into the sea directly.

Pollution control board directs meat complex to repair effluent treatment plant

PANAJI: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday directed the Goa Meat Complex to repair the existing effluent treatment plant (ETP), which treats the waste water generated by the meat complex while slaughtering animals. The board also said that failure to comply with the directions will force the GSPCB to withdraw the consent to operate under the Water Act. The GSPCB held a personal hearing with a representative of the meat complex. Board members highlighted the findings of the inspection report which stated that the ETP is not functioning. Speaking to TOI, GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that the inspection report states that the chemical oxygen limit has increased to 2,500 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 250 mg/litre. "It is ten times higher than the permissible limit," he added. He also said that bio-chemical oxygen limit has gone up to 850 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 30mg/liter. Water level rise in reservoirs of Kerala

With the heavy rain in the recent days Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has seen a rise in level of water in reservoirs by 2 percent raising the toll from 72% to 74%. As the water level increased, it made possible to produce from 2,985.2 mu (million unit) of electricity on the first day to 3,045.231 mu on the third day with the rising trend on 4 th day too. It is observed for the first time that the water storage level has risen to the extent that the Pampa and Kakki reservoirs has seen the rise in water level by 5 percent within a single day. Even the Kundal reservoir was operated at its full capacity and the Sholayar dam saw a rose by 1 percent. Even the Mullaperiyar dam saw a drastic rise in water storage on a single day with 128 ft which was 121.7 ft two days earlier.
