Existing water cuts to continue in Nashik

NASHIK: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Monday announced that there would be no further water cuts, however they civic administration will continue with the existing water cuts.

The decision was taken by city mayor, Yatin Wagh after a review of the water storage in Gangapur dam, by the officials from the NMC's water department. The dam is the main source of drinking water for the city.

The NMC has already enforced 15-20 % water cuts with water supply once a day across all six divisions of NMC since February 19. This was done with an aim to avoid any water crisis in the future.

Mayor Yatin Wagh said, "The period of water reservation for the Gangapur dam is from October 15, 2012 to July 15, 2013. The NMC's reservation in the Gangapur dam for the period is 3,600 million cubic feet (mcft). As of May 13, we have used 2,500 mcft of water in the dam and our remaining reservation is now 1,100 mcft. Around 770 mcft will be used by July 15, while the rest of the 330 mcft will last till August 15."

Wagh added, "We have a reservation of 600 mcft water in Darna dam, but it is not feasible to lift water from the dam. So, the government has increased the NMC's reservation by 100 MCFT in the Gangapur dam. We now have a total reservation of 1,200 mcft in Gangapur dam and this reservation will last till August 15 if the existing water cuts are continued till then. Therefore, we have decided not to impose any further water cuts and will only continue with the existing water cuts in the city."

Pollution control board directs meat complex to repair effluent treatment plant

PANAJI: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday directed the Goa Meat Complex to repair the existing effluent treatment plant (ETP), which treats the waste water generated by the meat complex while slaughtering animals. The board also said that failure to comply with the directions will force the GSPCB to withdraw the consent to operate under the Water Act. The GSPCB held a personal hearing with a representative of the meat complex. Board members highlighted the findings of the inspection report which stated that the ETP is not functioning. Speaking to TOI, GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that the inspection report states that the chemical oxygen limit has increased to 2,500 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 250 mg/litre. Water level rise in reservoirs of Kerala

With the heavy rain in the recent days Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has seen a rise in level of water in reservoirs by 2 percent raising the toll from 72% to 74%. As the water level increased, it made possible to produce from 2,985.2 mu (million unit) of electricity on the first day to 3,045.231 mu on the third day with the rising trend on 4 th day too. It is observed for the first time that the water storage level has risen to the extent that the Pampa and Kakki reservoirs has seen the rise in water level by 5 percent within a single day. Even the Kundal reservoir was operated at its full capacity and the Sholayar dam saw a rose by 1 percent. Even the Mullaperiyar dam saw a drastic rise in water storage on a single day with 128 ft which was 121.7 ft two days earlier.
