Water crisis leaves several areas parched

LUCKNOW: While soaring temperature is constantly testing patience of people, the element to beat heat - water -- is also not being provided in sufficient quantity. Residents who are already grappling with poor electricity supply in scorching summer are finding hard to survive amid water shortage.

The worst hit areas are trans-Gomti localities like Vikasnagar, Nishatganj and Paper Mill Colony. In Paper Mill Colony, residents complain supply is intermittent and even when it is comes, it is just for about half an hour. Manju Chauhan, a resident of Paper Mill Colony, rued: "The water supply has been missing for days and our household chores have been suffering due to water scarcity."

In Aliganj, people complain about presence of dust, sand and gravel particles in the government water supply. A resident, Dr RK Verma, said the problem has been chronic. Even Vikasnagar is not free from its share of woes, main being irregular supply hours and extremely thin flow. Ambika Prasad Srivastava, a senior citizen living in this area, said, "Almost all people have now installed boring pumps in their houses to draw water since the government supply is very rare. Even if it comes, it is barely for 10-15 minutes in both shifts which doesn't suffice family's needs."

Cis-Gomti area which largely comprises Indiranagar and Gomtinagar too has been affected by erratic supply hours. In Viram Khand of Gomtinagar, there is no fixed timing of supply hours. This leads to lot of confusion and delaying of household chores. Padmini Singh a housewife, said, "Sometimes they give supply in the wee hours of morning while sometimes even during afternoons. We have to be on guards all the time in order to fill in our tanks. Many times, we have missed out on water storage due to erratic schedule."

In Indiranagar, the problem is more severe with supply missing for days. People in some parts of this locality are surviving with just 10-15 minutes of water supply in a day. Ravi Bisht of Indiranagar said, "We didn't receive even a single drop of water on Thursday. Even earlier, the daily supply was barely for half an hour. In summers with demand for water rising, the supply shortage is simply unbearable. One obviously needs more water during summers to refill coolers and for bathing, drinking and washing purposes." Residents argued that people usually have a lot of work during mornings and storing water for the entire day is a big headache for them.

Since water supply is dependant on electricity, people in other parts of the city complained that because of poor voltage and frequent fluctuations, pumps are unable to draw sufficient water from underground.

Priyanka Srivastava of Niralanagar says, "We are comparatively better off than other colonies as we are receiving water for nearly one and half hours in both shifts. The only problem is that the flow is so thin that it is unable to fill water tank in that time period. We often get late to our offices while waiting for the tank to fill."

In Mahanagar, which is a posh colony of Lucknow, residents complained that since power cuts usually occur during morning and evening hours, tube wells in their areas are often not able to draw water to fill in the tanks. Vilas Agnihotri of Mahanagar said that residents have been of late witnessing muddy and dark water supply during mornings. "I guess it is because government tanks are rarely cleaned and since many times they get vacant, the incoming water-supply brings along soil particles settled on the basement of the tank", he adds.
