Water tariff agenda too on the cards

CHANDIGARH: Deferred in the last house meeting owing to time crunch, water tariff agenda is coming up for detailed discussion on Friday.

According to the new plan, the civic body has revised the plan by enhancing the tariff to curtail the misuse of water in northern area of the city. If MC passes the revised tariff plan, then the authority will be able to earn a revenue of Rs 36.30 crore more.

The MC has analyzed last one year's data of all consumers under MC and concluded: "There are 1,50,000 water meter connections across categories such as domestic, lawn, commercial, semi-commercial, institutional, government, industrial, etc. in the city. It has been found that out of 1.2 lacs consumers of domestic category, about 13,760 consumers are having water consumption more than 60 kl per month, which is much higher than the normal water consumption. Further, the analysis shows that consumption is more in northern sectors as compared to the other sectors and some sectors?2, 3, 4, 5 and 9?are drawing more than 1,000 litres of water per day as against the average domestic demand of the city, 252 litres. This is due to the fact that the houses are of size one kanal or more in these sectors and drinking water is used for irrigation of lawns causing wastage/misuse of water."

Pollution control board directs meat complex to repair effluent treatment plant

PANAJI: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday directed the Goa Meat Complex to repair the existing effluent treatment plant (ETP), which treats the waste water generated by the meat complex while slaughtering animals. The board also said that failure to comply with the directions will force the GSPCB to withdraw the consent to operate under the Water Act. The GSPCB held a personal hearing with a representative of the meat complex. Board members highlighted the findings of the inspection report which stated that the ETP is not functioning. Speaking to TOI, GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that the inspection report states that the chemical oxygen limit has increased to 2,500 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 250 mg/litre. "It is ten times higher than the permissible limit," he added. He also said that bio-chemical oxygen limit has gone up to 850 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 30mg/liter. Water level rise in reservoirs of Kerala

With the heavy rain in the recent days Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has seen a rise in level of water in reservoirs by 2 percent raising the toll from 72% to 74%. As the water level increased, it made possible to produce from 2,985.2 mu (million unit) of electricity on the first day to 3,045.231 mu on the third day with the rising trend on 4 th day too. It is observed for the first time that the water storage level has risen to the extent that the Pampa and Kakki reservoirs has seen the rise in water level by 5 percent within a single day. Even the Kundal reservoir was operated at its full capacity and the Sholayar dam saw a rose by 1 percent. Even the Mullaperiyar dam saw a drastic rise in water storage on a single day with 128 ft which was 121.7 ft two days earlier.
