Dirty water overflows as sewage pipe explodes

LUDHIANA: Dirty water filled the roads of several areas after a sewage pipe exploded on Chandigarh road on Tuesday. Jamalpur area was the worst hit area.

The explosion in the pipe occurred at 12.30 pm, but the Ludhiana municipal corporation did not bother to drain out the water. The authorities just filled the manhole, where the explosion took place, with sand even without repairing the pipe.

A B&R department official, on the condition of anonymity, said load on sewerage pipes have increased manifold and absence of storm sewerage has added to the burden. Constant and heavy rains have compounded the matter. According to him, with the rains lashing Ludhiana, pipes at many places could burst anytime.

Meanwhile, traffic moved at a snail's pace on the Chandigarh road. Several residents blamed lack of cleaning and ill-equipped MC for the blast.

"These pipes have too much of load which results in choking. The situation got worse after heavy rain in morning. The MC should lay new sewerage if it wants to solve the problem," said Puneet Bhatia, a resident from Chandigarh road.

Satinder Singh Grewal, councillor of Ward 11, said, "Although the pipes were cleaned before the monsoon, the problem exists as the pipes are of small width. Sewer flows down from focal point towards Jamalpur which increases the pressure in the pipes." He said the width of pipes in the area should be doubled from 32 inches.

According to residents living in the nearby areas for more than a decade, say the area population has increased tremendously in the last 5 to 7 years, but the sewerage capacity has seen no improvement.
Pictures of dirty water flowing in the area were uploaded on the social networking sites which created fear of similar situation in several low-lying areas, including Model Town, Sarabha Nagar, Model Town Extension, old city and Civil Lines.

Deepender Singh, a resident from Sarabha Nagar, said, "Similar explosions can happen here. After it rain, all the water from the main roads like Ferozepur road, flows down to our area. We have taken up the matter with MC officials, but there has been no progress."

Manjeet Singh, official from the sewerage department, said, "For now, we have covered the manhole with sand. We will start the repair work only after the monsoon is over."

Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria, said, "Plans are afoot to tackle the problem. We will lay new sewerage with better designs as soon as rains are over."
