Water released from Ukai dam to facilitate Ganesha immersion in SuratSURAT: Good rain in upper catchments of Tapi river led to substantial increase in inflow of water to Ukai dam on Wednesday morning.

This helped the dam authorities increase the release of water for smooth Ganesha immersion process in Surat city.

Ukai dam recorded inflow of 1,61,846 cusecs of water at 10am on Wednesday. The inflow is due to good rainfall in some upper catchment stations on Tuesday.

Hathnoor recorded 48.4 mm, Burhanpur 23.4 mm, Girna 22.6 mm, Dahigaon30.4 mm, Fhulia 47.4 mm, Savkheda 42.6 mm, Gidhade 40.4 mm and Ukia 66.4 mm of rain.

On Wednesday morning, Dahigaon recorded 37.6 mm, Bhusaval 37.4 mm and Hathnoor 16 mm of rain.

Dam authorities started release of 40,000 cusecs of water from 10pm of Tuesday to facilitate smooth Ganesh immersion process in downstream of Ukai dam including Surat city. The discharge was increased to 70,161 cusecs from 7am on Wednesday and would continue till 2pm .

Water takes roughly 7 hours to reach Surat from Ukai.

PS Dave, engineer on duty at Ukai dam said, " Levels at Dam have gone up due to inflow of water but we are still below the rule level."

The levels at Ukai reservoir were recorded at 338.17 feet against the rule level of 340.93 feet for the day.
