Gurgaon running out of water for construction

GURGAON: The massive expansion of sectors in Gurgaon is all set to impact the initiatives of the civic authorities to provide water for construction of housing projects. Last year, after the Punjab and Haryana High Court order, digging borewells in Gurgaon are banned and HUDA is now the nodal agency to provide treated water from STPs to builders. Hundreds of gallons of treated water are being supplied to builders for projects which are in different stages of constructions in Gurgaon. Residents and activists, however, claim that the option of supplying water from STP would become unfeasible to cater the new projects that are coming in Sectors beyond 58. "This is unfortunate that DTCP keeps issuing new licences to builders for new projects. There is complete lack of vision to understand about water needs for the massive construction that would come in future," said Raman Sharma, president, Progressive Gurgaon Forum. At present, HUDA is providing treated water from two Sewage Treatment Plants, which is not sufficient as per the demand needs of the construction sites. "Ideally, HUDA must make more STPs functional in the region to ensure that enough treated water is available for supply to builders," said Sharma. Before being eligible for treated water, the builders have to give an affidavit about not using borewells at the sites. Sharma said: "There is no system in place to monitor if borewells are being used at the sites or not. There have been sporadic inspections and raids at the sites to seal borewells in past." HUDA and the DTCP had prepared the list of builders who have got borewells permission in past but no effort has been made to seal or dismantle all of them permanently. "Now, this is something which needs to be done. Even the minimal use of borewells will be detrimental for the receding ground water tables in the region," said Amit Arora, a Sector 4 resident. Senior officials of HUDA, however, claimed that the borewell ban is being enforced in letter and spirit in the region. "The treated water is being supplied round the clock for the construction sites in Gurgaon and there is no question of allowing anyone using borewells at the construction site," said a senior HUDA official.
