'Raincoats are the hot pick among schoolchildren'

MYSORE: The delay in monsoon in the region is raising concerns among farmers and Mysoreans due to water scarcity. However, shop owners selling school materials are doing good business, thanks to wary schoolchildren who are expecting rain after their schools reopen.

When STOI visited shops selling raincoats, umbrellas and waterproof bags, it found that majority of the customers visiting the shops in the last fortnight had been schoolchildren. According to shopkeepers, their business has picked up since the last two weeks.

Heavy rush can be witnessed at shops on DD Urs Road and in commercial streets like Sayyaji Rao Road and Kalidasa Road.

According to Naryanamurthy, owner of a shop on DD Urs Road, children started their preparations when the region received its first showers some weeks ago.

"As per their age and choice, children pick up schoolbags, lunch bags, raincoats and shoes," he added.

"Umbrellas have become quite outdated as per the contemporary fashion -- children now feel more comfortable with raincoats to escape the rain," said another shopkeeper Vikram Babu. Only elders buy umbrellas, while children prefer raincoats. "Raincoats have become a style statement among children, especially those in lower classes," he claimed. School bags are being sold in Rs 300-1,000 range.

Apart from that, water-proof bags have also become the vogue in Mysore, which receives moderate rain compared to other places. "It is always good to have water-proof bags, one might not know when will it rain.

"We used to keep plastic covers in our school bags to save our books and notebooks from rainwater. But buying water-proof bags for our children is fine," said a homemaker Laxmi, who came to DD Urs Road to shop for school bags.
