Trenches add to monsoon woes for Bowenpally residents

HYDERABAD: Apart from the regular civic woes that accompany monsoon showers, the residents of Bowenpally have a lot more to worry about their safety, thanks to unfinished project work taken up by the electricity department. To lay underground power cables, the electricity department had dug up about four large trenches, up to 10 feet high, along the Diamond Point and Sikh Road stretch. However the work has remained unfinished since the last four months thus causing a lot of inconvenience to residents as well as commuters. "I am keeping my shop closed most of the time because of these uncovered trenches," said P Sairam, a stationery shop owner in the area. "There is so much of dust that comes in to my shop that I have to clean it on an hourly basis. It has also affected my business badly as there are hardly any customers visiting my store because of this mess and also due to parking issues," he said. "Following the recent rains, the whole place has become very risky," said local residents. "In a single day, I witnessed about 10 minor accidents due to skidding as the road has become narrow," said K R Nikhil, a student residing in the area. "During nights, there is every possibility that a motorist may fall into these trenches. The alert signboards are also not in place and the traffic commotion every morning and evening is maddening" The innumerable complaints to the department concerned have fallen on deaf ears, as the locals fear that water-logging in these trenches may become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. "Along with the rainwater, waste is also getting carried into these trenches and bad smell emanating from it is horrible" said P Lakshmi, a housewife. "This area is already known for mosquito menace and these trenches will only aggravate the problem. We are seriously concerned about health and safety. Hope the administration does something about it soon." Even after repeated attempts, the officials of the department concerned could not be contacted on this issue.

Pollution control board directs meat complex to repair effluent treatment plant

PANAJI: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday directed the Goa Meat Complex to repair the existing effluent treatment plant (ETP), which treats the waste water generated by the meat complex while slaughtering animals. The board also said that failure to comply with the directions will force the GSPCB to withdraw the consent to operate under the Water Act. The GSPCB held a personal hearing with a representative of the meat complex. Board members highlighted the findings of the inspection report which stated that the ETP is not functioning. Speaking to TOI, GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that the inspection report states that the chemical oxygen limit has increased to 2,500 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 250 mg/litre. "It is ten times higher than the permissible limit," he added. He also said that bio-chemical oxygen limit has gone up to 850 mg/litre against the permissible limit of 30mg/liter. Water level rise in reservoirs of Kerala

With the heavy rain in the recent days Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has seen a rise in level of water in reservoirs by 2 percent raising the toll from 72% to 74%. As the water level increased, it made possible to produce from 2,985.2 mu (million unit) of electricity on the first day to 3,045.231 mu on the third day with the rising trend on 4 th day too. It is observed for the first time that the water storage level has risen to the extent that the Pampa and Kakki reservoirs has seen the rise in water level by 5 percent within a single day. Even the Kundal reservoir was operated at its full capacity and the Sholayar dam saw a rose by 1 percent. Even the Mullaperiyar dam saw a drastic rise in water storage on a single day with 128 ft which was 121.7 ft two days earlier.
