PCMC to set up lab to test water samples from Pavana

PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation will set up a laboratory to regularly test water samples from the Pavana river and nullahs to monitor pollution level and submit reports to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) for further action.

The laboratory will also monitor solid waste, air, sound and soil pollution levels within the municipal limits. A proposal with instructions from the municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi will be tabled at the standing committee meeting on June 4, to streamline data collection.

Earlier in November 15, 2011, the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority had directed the civic body to take water samples from Pavana dam and Pavana river at Khadde, Thugaon, Bebedohol, Godumbre, Gahunje, Shivane, Ravet bund and other locations and test them at the MPCB laboratory or any other laboratory certified by the board. The tests were conducted only when it was necessary to check pH level, total solids, dissolved oxygen, dissolved solids, biological oxygen demand, total coliforms and fecal coliforms.

Now, the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran has also asked the civic body to test water samples of rivers, nullahs, solid waste, air and soil within the municipal limits. These tests are to be conducted at government certified laboratory - Growthlab in Bhosari for a period of three years. The annual expenditure for the tests is expected to be Rs 19.83 lakh under a three year contract.

Speaking to TOI, Sanjay Kulkarni, executive engineer, environment department at the civic body said, "Earlier, the civic body conducted tests of the water samples of Pavana river only when required through government certified laboratories.

However, the civic body receives complaints from citizens about industries releasing untreated effluents in the river or nullahs at night. Citizens living near the garbage depot have complained about soil or underground water pollution, for which tests have to be done." To conduct the chemical tests of water samples throughout the year, the civic body has decided to appoint a government certified laboratory, he added.

The laboratory will continuously monitor the nullahs flowing through industrial areas and rivers in municipal limits and submit monthly reports, said Kulkarni."If the civic body finds pollution in the rivers and nullahs, it will inform the pollution control board to take appropriate action," Kulkarni said.
